 About Sound Asleep - EP

Sound Asleep was released in 1999 and is similar to In the Shadows in that there are several instrumentals. "Give Unto Me" is the same version that appeared on the original demo as "Give Into Me - Demo 1996." In addition to the original version of "Ascension of the Spirit," a short version has also been included, which just includes the string encore.

"Understanding" again makes an appearance. It's clear that the band wanted the song to end up on a studio album, since several short versions were made.

The only new songs unique thus far are "Whisper" and "Forgive Me." The lyrics, structure, tune, and basic instrumental of "Whisper" did not change through a slew of appearances, as the opening track for Origin and Demo CD, as well as the final track for the studio album, Fallen. By this token, "Whisper" is the most original track released by Evanescence, and also the most timeless. The demo version lacks the vocal interlude after the bridge and the Latin chant at the end that subsequent versions had added to them, but the lyrics are exactly the same.

The musical style of "Forgive Me" is surprisingly progressive for an EP in that it doesn't seem to go with the rest of the album. Its lighter tone and instrumental parts fit better on the later-released Demos 2001-2002, but its inclusion on this EP shows how the band's style was evolving rapidly during their demo period.
