About Origin

Origin is Evanescence's first "real" album, though it is still considered a demo.

The songs "Whisper," "Imaginary," "My Immortal," and "Where Will You Go" are rerecorded versions of songs from previous EPs. They have more of an alternative rock feel to them, with the heavier use of guitars and a faster beat. The version of "My Immortal" on this demo is almost the same version as the one that appears on Fallen, but without the guitar part that was added later.

The other songs on this demo are unique. "Field of Innocence" is about a loss of innocence as ignorance of the world is lost. It is appropriate for Amy Lee, as she was 18 years old when the demo was released. "Lies" can be a confusing song to interpret, as it has a mixed message. The first verse berates the listener for being weak and inadequate; the second verse bears a message straight from the Christian Bible. Which one is the lie? Is all of it a lie?

"Away from Me" is one of the more intimate songs on the album. The lyrics contain laments about living a lie and wanting to get away from oneself.

The album had an alternate ending before it was released; the songs "Listen to the Rain" and "Demise" were combined after the "Eternal" instrumental, but this got cut out, probably due to length. The Pre-Release Alternate Ending contains "Away from Me" as well as this extended version of "Eternal." In the published version of the instrumental, the piano part of "Listen to the Rain" can be heard at the end of the song. The lyrics were included in the original version as well as the instrumental, so this song is listed as an outtake.

"Faixa Five" or "Catherine" (no one really knows) is one of those mysterious never-released songs. A song called "Catherine" was originally intended to be on this album; however, it did not make the cut. An untitled song was performed once by Evanescence in the '90s in a bar for about 25 people; the recording is on YouTube, and it is believed that this is the mysterious outtake. The song is said, by Evanescence, to have been written in a movie theater parking lot.
