About Evanescence - EP

This is Evanescence's official EP (experimental project). Several of the songs and outtakes were carried over from their previous demo, including "Solitude" and "Understanding."

The album art aptly advertises the tone of the album. The first track, "Where Will You Go," begins with a slow organ melody which reminds one of a funeral or a church service. The lyrics for the EP version of this song are different from the version that made it onto Origin, but the chorus and tune did not change a bit. "Exodus" is another song that possesses a sad, lonely tone, being about running away from home and hiding in the shadows. Lines like, "I've nowhere else to go but I cannot stay where I don't belong," reveal the general teenage angst that many artists express in their early work (lyricist Amy Lee was 17 when the EP was released in 1998).

Although the song did not appear on any of Evanescence's studio albums, "So Close," obscurely referred to as, "The Last Day," has especially interesting lyrics. This song may have inspired some of the songs that did end up on studio albums.

Most obviously, the two most notable songs on the EP are "Imaginary" and "My Immortal," since they have almost exact counterparts on the studio album, Fallen. It is interesting that "My Immortal" was originally an outtake and did not reappear on any other demo compilations or EPs until Origin, on which the final version was presented. The song has not changed much from its EP roots and has become one of the most popular Evanescence songs.

"Imaginary" has, however. The EP version here is quite slow; there's not much to the lyrics. However, the song quickly developed, appearing again with the same lyrical structure on Origin with a more hardcore melody, then being included in all subsequent demos, ever evolving into the version on the studio album, Fallen.
