About Demos 2001-2002

This demo compilation is the largest collection of pre-Fallen demos. Some of these songs only appear here and were never put onto another album. Several of them went on to be featured on Fallen or Anywhere But Home.

The songs "Anything for You," "Before the Dawn," "Forever Gone, Forever You," and "Surrender" only appear as demos on this album. "Even in Death," "Exodus," "Forgive Me," "I Must Be Dreaming," "So Close," and "Understanding" were never featured on a studio album or single.

"Anything for You" has the fastest tempo of any Evanescence song. Note that, at the end of the verse, the Lacrymosa can be heard playing in the background, and the tune matches up to Evanescence's later song, "Lacrymosa," released on The Open Door. The words, "If you want me, come and find me," appear in "Call Me When You're Sober" on the same album. "Anything for You" is unique in that it is the only demo that apparently influenced The Open Door; its message is also pretty rare among other Evanescence songs. Instead of feeling trapped and alone, or repulsed by her lover's ways and refusing to tolerate it, Amy Lee is actually giving in ("I'll believe all your lies, just pretend you love me. I'll be anything for you.").

"Forever Gone, Forever You" was particularly hard for me to find. It did not come with the demo download where I got most of these songs. I believe it is the precursor to "Bring Me to Life," as the tune is similar (compare the chorus in "FGFY" to the verses in "BMtL").

Note that "I Must Be Dreaming" is an alternate name for "Bleed."

The version of "Imaginary" on this demo differs from the album version only in the bridge. It completely abandons the "swallowed up in the sound of my screaming" verse in all other versions and takes a different approach to leaving this world: suicide.
